Configure iDrac6 (Remote Access Controller 6) on ESXi Hosts

  1. Right Click on ESXi1 and Enter Maintenance Mode. Yes to move VMs and OK.



  2. Drag to Move the ESXi1 from VMware 5.1 Cluster to Maintenance Cluster


  3. Open a KVM to Press Ctrl + E to enter to setup


  4. Select LAN Parameters


  5. Enable VLAN and Set VLAN ID to 255


  6. Click Domain Name and input vmlab.local


  7. Save changes and Exit


  8. Reboot the host and verify with the ping test to the remote console IP works properly.


  9. Open IE, and type console IP and click Continue to this website (not recommended)


  10. Type username and password to get access to remote access controller


  11. Verify it accesses properly


Configure Dell OpenManage Integration plug-ins on vCenter environment

  1. On vSphere Client, access to vc5 and go to Home>Load Dell Management Center


  2. Yes to continue


  3. Connection Profiles>Create New


  4. Input Profile name and Description if need


  5. Check VMware 5.1 Cluster


  6. Next


  7. Input IDRAC Cred


  8. Input ESXi Host Cred


  9. Just Save and continue without test


    If tested, it will fail to connect as below due to no CSIOR and OMSA Agent installed on the ESXi Hosts


  10. Leave as default, and Click Save and Continue







  11. Finish


  12. Click Fix vSphere Hosts for Compliance on the Overview screen


  13. Next




  14. Uncheck to manually put in the maintenance mode and reboot Hosts


  15. Finish to fix hosts


  16. Monitor the tasks are running




  17. Manually put each ESXi Host to Maintenance mode and reboot manually to complete the installation at a time.
  18. Click Connection Profiles again and Test Connection Profile. And Click Test Selected


  19. It will pass the connections as below


  20. Inventory Scan will run automatically and will found 2 Hosts inventoried successfully as below task pane


Dell Firmware Updates from an ESXi Host

  1. Enter ESXi2 to the Maintenance Mode.
  2. Drag to Move the ESXi2 from VMware 5.1 Cluster to Maintenance Cluster


  3. Go to Home>Inventory>Hosts and Clusters> select esxi1 and click OpenManage Integration Tab


  4. Click Run Firmware update Wizard under Host Actions


  5. Uncheck exit maintenance mode after firmware update completes option and click update


  6. OK to continue


  7. It will keep updating status on Recent Tasks


  8. Reboot ESXi2 to continue firmware updates


  9. But, I got an error as below

  10. Then, the events log shows the following info.

  11. To fix this issue, Go to Configuration Tab on the ESXi2>Networking>Click Properties of Standard vSwitch1

  12. Select iSCSI_LUN_Redundancy Port and Edit

  13. NIC Teaming Tab> move up vmnic1 from unused Adapters to Standby Adaptors to apply change

  14. Yes to Continue

  15. Repeat the same on iSCSI_LUN for vmnic5 to move up to Standby Adaptors
  16. Do the same configurations change on ESXi1 as well

     

  17. Then, try to run Firmware Update Wizard on Step4 above on ESXi2 again

     

  18. This time it runs correctly as below and show the status is “in progress”

  19. Then, it finally completed the Firmware update task

  20. Run Firmware Update wizard again
  21. Click Update from repository

  22. Next

  23. Click Check All Box to select all available upgrade

  24. Select Apply Update(s) on next reboot option

  25. Wait until all the pending patches were pushed to iDRAC

  26. Reboot the host manually (Make sure the host is in maintenance mode and maintenance cluster to pause any alert generating)

  27. After rebooting, repeat the above update steps till no further updates available.
  28. After all done, move ESXi2 back to VMware 5.1 Cluster and exit out from the maintenance mode.
  29. Do the same update task for ESXi1 as well

Patch ESXi Hosts

  1. Go to Home>Inventory>Hosts and Clusters> select esxi1 and Update Manager


  2. Click Attach


  3. Check all for Patch Baselines and Attach


  4. Click Remediate


  5. Next



  6. Yes to continue


  7. Immediately


  8. Next



  9. Finish to start Patching


  10. Monitor the patching status from Recent Tasks Tab


  11. After ESXi1 is rebooted click Scan


  12. Uncheck Upgrades


  13. Check the Complaint Status all Green and verify completed


  14. Move back ESXi1 to VMware 5.1 and exit from the Maintenance mode
  15. Enter ESXi2 Host to the maintenance mode and do the same ESXi Patch Steps
